Study in UK: Gates Cambridge University Scholarship for international students 2022/2023

Overview: Gates Cambridge Scholarships

When the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave the University of Cambridge a US$210 million contribution in October 2000, the largest ever given to a UK university, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was born. In October 2001, the first batch of scholars arrived.

About 80 full-fee scholarships from Gates Cambridge are given each year to deserving international students who want to enroll in full-time postgraduate programs at the University of Cambridge in any field. About 25 scholarships will be available in the US round and 55 awards will be available in the international round, both of which will be available to PhD candidates.

Criteria

What we're looking for Our Scholars come from all walks of life, and each brings something unique to the program. We select them based on four criteria.

Academic excellence

To be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, candidates must demonstrate academic achievement (through their transcripts, references, experience and the potential to succeed on the chosen course). Academic departments at the University of Cambridge nominate only the most intellectually brilliant applicants for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, ensuring that those chosen will succeed at Cambridge.

Course Selection Criteria

You should be able to present a compelling case for a specific Cambridge postgraduate degree. PhD candidates (and the majority of research MPhil candidates) must contact a potential supervisor with whom they will develop a research project, which will be summarized in the application. To complete the course, you must demonstrate that you have the necessary academic background, abilities, and competence. Taught MPhil applicants, as well as other applicants, must show how completing the proposed course will help them advance in their careers. Gates Cambridge is looking for Scholars who will have an academically transformative experience, so do your research and justify the course you are applying for thoroughly.

A desire to make a difference in the lives of others

Our Scholars' dedication to bettering the lives of others is a defining feature of the Gates Cambridge program. This criterion is interpreted broadly, and applicants define it for themselves by demonstrating their past, current, and future commitment to the cultures in which they will live and work.

Having the ability to lead

Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate leadership abilities in a variety of ways. Applicants should demonstrate their previous leadership experience and explain how their leadership skills will benefit them in their future careers.

A note on the PhD:Masters award ratio

We aim to select approximately two-thirds of PhD scholars each year in order to develop and nurture a vibrant Scholar community at Cambridge University and to help Scholars make the most of their time in Cambridge. Applicants for a taught Master's degree should take the time to explain why this is the best course for them and how it will benefit their future academic or professional goals.

Application deadlines:

Both require submission via the same online format, but you must apply now by whichever deadline comes first.
