Tsinghua University's Schwarzman Scholarship Program 2024/2025

Overview:

The purpose of Schwarzman Scholars is to prepare students for the difficulties that lie ahead.

It was influenced by the Rhodes Scholarship, which was established in 1902 to advance global amity and peace.

Up to 200 scholars from the United States, China, and other countries are supported by Schwarzman Scholars each year to pursue a one-year master's degree in global affairs at Beijing's Tsinghua University, which is ranked first in Asia and serves as the foundation for China's leadership in politics, business, and technology.

The extremely exclusive program will place selected students in Beijing for a year of study and cultural immersion, where they will attend lectures, explore the area, and gain a deeper understanding of China.

Schwarzman Scholars became one of the most prestigious graduate and fellowship programs in the world as soon as admissions began in the fall of 2015 with exceptional success.

More about Tsinghua University

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE FOR A WORLD IN CHANGE

Through a vibrant Student Life Program, Schwarzman Scholars will establish priceless professional and interpersonal ties in Beijing and elsewhere.

The program will increase students' knowledge of China and connect them to a wider global network.

It is a crucial component of leadership development.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM LEARNING

Internship opportunities at prestigious universities, businesses, and nonprofits will be available to students.

These initiatives provide hands-on learning that improves students' academic interests, fosters the development of Chinese business partnerships, and quickens students' progression toward leadership.

On the basis of their areas of specialization and career ambitions, students will be matched to specific opportunities once they arrive in Beijing.

IMPORTANT CHANCE TO SERVE AS A MENTOR

Additionally, each student will have the chance to collaborate closely with a senior mentor.

Leading figures from Beijing's economic, academic, and governmental communities will encourage the development of students' personal and professional aspirations.

Students will get the abilities to maximize their leadership potential no matter where in the globe their professions may take them thanks to the combination of classroom instruction and practical experience.

VISUALIZING THE TRUE CHINA

Schwarzman Scholars will travel across China to investigate topics related to their academic specializations and career interests.

This will take them beyond daily life in Beijing. Students will travel to various locales under the direction of instructors and local guides, where they will interact with political, business, and social leaders.

These excursions will help students build a more in-depth awareness of the many opportunities and difficulties brought on by China's development and global role.

TRAINING IN MULTI-DIMENSIONAL LEADERSHIP

Both the coursework and the student experience of the Schwarzman Scholars program incorporate leadership development.

The program offers a course that is primarily geared at leadership training to serve as a basis for the exposure students will gain from mentors and internships.

Students will develop broader perspectives, a crucial trait of effective leaders, in a setting that prioritizes interaction and cooperation.

All lessons and activities will be created so that students can share knowledge and experience while also understanding and appreciating one another's diverse origins, worldviews, and problem-solving approaches.

Institution(s) hosting:

Tsinghua University in Beijing, China

Study Level/Fields:
Public policy, economics and business, or international studies concentrations for a master's degree and leadership program in global affairs.

Amount of Awards:

Up to 200 students, with around 45% from the United States, 20% from China, and 35% from the rest of the world, will make up the inaugural class.

Scholarship worth and components:

Schwarzman Scholars are exceptional students who have been chosen to receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing at the start and end of the academic year, an in-country study tour, required course books and supplies, health insurance, and a stipend for the individual.

Eligibility:

First degree earned at a reputable college or university, or its equivalent, during undergraduate studies.

No matter their nationality, individuals between the ages of 18 and 28 who are fluent in English and have earned an undergraduate degree or its equivalent are eligible for the program.

Admission does not require proficiency in Mandarin. Successful applicants are young individuals who have already started to show the ability to lead and generate results in their areas and who are dedicated to fostering understanding between those with different perspectives, whether they be in politics, business, the sciences, or the arts.

Those who are applying must be on track to successfully complete all degree requirements before August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year. This requirement applies to those who are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programs.

All undergraduate majors are acceptable; there are no requirements for a particular field of study. However, it is crucial for applicants, regardless of undergraduate major, to explain how being a Schwarzman Scholar will help them develop their leadership potential in their field.

Age restriction.

As of August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year, candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years old.

Proficiency in the English language.

Since all instruction will be in English, applicants must exhibit good language proficiency. If English is not the applicant's first language, official English proficiency test results must be included with the application. Suitable exam alternatives include:
  •  English language proficiency test, score of at least 600.
  •  English as a Foreign Language Test offered online, a 100 minimum score.
  • System for International English Language Testing (IELTS). Minimum rating: 7.
Applicants who completed their undergraduate studies at a school where English was the major language of teaching for at least two years are exempted  from this requirement. Additionally, applicants with a Master's degree who have studied in English for two or more years are exempted from this criterion.

Due to heavy demand, it has been challenging for many Chinese Schwarzman Scholar applicants to register at English language testing facilities in Mainland China.

We will allow applicants from China to temporarily submit results from CET-6 or TEM-8, utilizing the "extra information" section in the application form, in order to ensure that talented applicants are not dismissed in this initial year.

Before judgments about the semi-finalists are made, those applicants must complete a phone interview if they are on the shortlist to be asked for an interview.

In the event that they are selected as finalists, their admission will be offered on a conditional basis, and they will still be needed to produce a TOEFL or IELTS score that is higher than the minimal threshold for Schwarzman Scholars by March 1, 2024.

For applicants who completed their undergraduate degree at a school where English was the predominant language of teaching for at least three years, this criterion is waived.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY:

  • Status of marriage: Married applicants are welcome to apply and will not experience any disadvantages. Schwarzman Scholars may bring their partners or spouses to Beijing, although Scholars are expected to reside in the dorm and take part in all aspects of the program just like single students. Couples are not permitted to reside in the dorms, and no additional cash will be given to assist couples that choose to live off-campus.
  • There are no requirements for nationality or citizenship.
  • grades, class standing, and prerequisites:  Successful applicants will need to demonstrate their academic prowess, but there is no requirement for a minimum GPA or class rank.
