The program, which is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, allows students to earn a Master's degree in Master programs with a focus on the social, political, and economic development of their home countries.

Highly qualified graduates with a first academic degree are being educated in political science, law, economics, and administration in preparation for future leadership roles in their home countries in accordance with Good Governance principles.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

The following are the required documentation for the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship 2023:

  • DAAD Research Grants and Study Scholarships Application Form (hand-signed, but electronically edited)
  • Hand-signed and dated motivation letter (one letter for both universities) outlining the applicants' academic/professional and personal reasons for selecting those master's programs and universities (two pages maximum).
  • Hand-signed and dated full curriculum vitae detailing your specific field of study, political and social involvement, and, if applicable, job experience description
  • Copies of earned academic degrees (certified translation if necessary, please attach an explanation of the grading system)
  • a transcript of the records (certified translation if necessary)
  • Language certificates (German and/or English) issued recently
  • One letter of recommendation, signed and recently dated by a university professor or current employer and accompanied by official letterhead

Eligibility Criteria:

Graduates (bachelor's degree or equivalent) from developing countries:
  • ready to actively contribute to their native nations' or regions' social, political, and economic growth;
  • having a first university degree that qualifies them in social and political sciences, law, economics, public policy, and administration
  • who already have the program's required practical experience (work experience, internships, political/social commitment)
Different language credentials and language proficiency criteria apply depending on the master's program. Aside from the DAAD requirements, each master's program has its own set of requirements that applicants must meet, such as those related to degree, grades, language proficiency, and work experience.

DAAD Scholarship Financial Benefits

The DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship offers fully funded scholarships to international students in Germany that cover all expenses. The Scholarship has the following advantages.
  • Scholarship of 931€ per month Contributions to German Health Insurance Round Trip Appropriate Travel Allowance
  • Subsidy for Study and Research
  • Where applicable, monthly rent subsidy
  • Where applicable, allowances for spouses and/or children
  • Six-month German language course. The language course is typically held at selected institutes in Germany rather than at the universities of the selected MA programs. The language course is also required for those pursuing a master's degree in English.

Scholarship Value/inclusion:

The Helmut Schmidt Program does not require recipients of DAAD scholarships to pay tuition. The monthly cost of a DAAD scholarship is 931 euros. The scholarship also includes funds for acceptable travel costs, a study and research grant, and, if required, rent grants and/or allowances for partners and/or dependent children.

In addition, all scholarship recipients will receive a 6-month German language course before starting their academic degrees. It is necessary to participate.

Target audience:

Candidates from Latin America, Asia, the Pacific, Western, Central, South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, Central Asia & South Caucasus, Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the Middle East and North Africa, are eligible for the fellowship program.

Applications methods

How to Apply:

The following are the steps to apply for the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship 2023:

Step 1: Fill out the DAAD Application Form for Research Grants and Study Scholarships (annex 2) only once, indicating which study course is your top priority and which is your second.

Step 2: Write a single letter of motivation justifying your first and second priority choices for both university courses.

Step 3: Send the DAAD scholarship form, along with the motivation letter and the documents listed below, to the two universities of your choice. Please DO NOT send it to DAAD.

Apply only to the specified universities for the selected master's programs and the DAAD scholarship when sending in your materials (not to DAAD). Applications must specifically include the DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Program (Master's Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance). From 1 June to 31 July 2022, applications will be accepted at all 8 universities.
