NZ-GRADS is a doctoral scholarship (PhD) program that provides science students from developing countries with the opportunity to complete their PhD at a New Zealand university.

Four PhD projects have been defined for this special round of NZ-GRADS, all of which are aligned with New Zealand priorities on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. 

You must choose one of the four PhD projects available.

Through its various partners in New Zealand and around the world, the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) provides a wide range of capability building and research programs. 

NZ-GRADS awardees will be actively supported by the GRA through various extension and networking events held in New Zealand.

Education New Zealand administers the NZ-GRADS, a government-funded scholarship. The scholarship covers all tuition and living expenses for up to three years.

Admission to the NZ-GRADS programme is conditional on the following for selected candidates:

Successful candidates must apply for a PhD program at the university associated with the chosen PhD project and meet the admission requirements.

Scholarships Financial Coverage/ Value 

 The scholarship covers the following for a total of three years (36 months):

  • Annual tuition fees and associated student levies at New Zealand University can total up to $10,000 NZD per year.
  • A yearly living stipend of $28,000 NZD (tax free)
  • Medical insurance coverage of up to $700 NZD per year
  • Visa application fees are limited to $1,000.
  • Return flights to New Zealand for a maximum of $6,000
  • A book and thesis preparation allowance of up to $1,500 (one-off)

    • For the duration of your studies, your partner or spouse will be able to apply for an open work visa.

  • You may be able to work in addition to your studies because PhD students in New Zealand typically have unlimited work rights.

Criteria for Eligibility into New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarships (NZGRADS)

The following criteria are non-negotiable:
  • Your PhD research must take place in New Zealand (not from a distance)
  • You are not eligible for citizenship or permanent residency in New Zealand or Australia.
  • You must be a citizen of a developing country. Current classifications can be found here.
  • You can only apply to one of the projects that are currently available.

The scholarship is funded by the Ministry of Primary Industries in New Zealand.

To ensure that the application documents are processed quickly and smoothly, all attachments must be uploaded in the application portal as PDF files only.

To complete this application, you must upload the following documents:
  • Evidence of citizenship for each country in which you are a citizen
  • Meet the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the chosen university.
  • Academic transcripts, grading scales, and completion certificates
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • One-page motivation letter outlining why you are the best candidate for the project you have chosen.
  • You must also provide the names and email addresses of two academic referees for your references.

Applications must be completed and submitted exclusively through the Education New Zealand online application portal by 30 September, 11:59 p.m. New Zealand time.
