Categories of work visas

In order to replace skilled worker visas in Australia, the Australian government established the General Skilled Migration program (Skillselect) in 2013.

The Skillselect system is intended to evaluate candidates' talents using a point-based system in order to select immigrants with the appropriate skills. Points are awarded to applicants based on the following criteria:

Age: People between the ages of 25 and 32 earn the most points, while those over 45 receive none.

Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through IELTS testing. If they get 8 or more bands, you get 20 points.

Educational qualification: In order to receive points in this category, your qualification must be related to your chosen occupation. A doctorate is worth up to 20 points, whereas a bachelor's or master's degree is worth only 15.

Skilled employment: If you have experience in a profession on the Skilled Occupations List, you will receive points based on the number of years of experience. The maximum number of points you can earn is 20.

Australian degrees: You can receive five points if you have an Australian degree from an Australian educational institution.

Study in a regional area: You will receive an extra 5 points if you have lived and studied in a regional area of Australia.

Community language proficiency: You will receive an extra 5 points if you have translator/interpreter-level proficiency in one of the nation's community languages.

If you have included your spouse or partner in the application but he or she is not an Australian resident or citizen, his or her skills and qualifications may be counted toward your total points. You will receive an additional five points if your spouse or partner meets the fundamental conditions of the Australian General Skilled Migration.

Professional year: You will be eligible for an additional 5 points if you have successfully completed a Professional Year from either ACS/CPA/CAANZ/IPA/Engineers Australia in Australia for at least 12 months in the previous four years. You must have at least 65 points to be eligible for a visa under the General Skilled Migrant Program.

If you meet the requirements for a Skilled Occupation List occupation, you may be eligible for a skilled independent visa (SOL). This visa does not require the sponsorship of an employer. Try the SkillSelect tool to see if your skills are in demand.

Employer Nomination Scheme: Employees who are sponsored by their employers are granted a permanent work visa under this program.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS Visa): This visa is valid for two to four years, depending on the needs of the employer. Candidates must be under the age of 45 and have at least two years of work experience. Employers who hire people on this visa are required to pay them the market rate.

 Options for permanent work visas

  • The Employers Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa allows skilled individuals nominated by their employer to live and work in the country permanently.
  • Visa under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS): This type of visa allows skilled workers from regional Australia who have been nominated by their employer to live and work permanently in Australia.
  • Invited workers and New Zealanders with the required skills may apply for a skilled independent visa, which allows them to live and work in Australia permanently.
  • The "Skilled Nominated" visa allows nominated skilled employees to live and work in Australia as permanent residents.
  • Distinguished Talent visa: This is a permanent visa for anyone who has a track record of outstanding performance in their field, whether it is academia, sports, the arts, or the performing or visual arts.

Temporary Work Visa Alternatives

1. TSS visa (temporary skill shortage): People can work under this visa for two to four years, depending on their needs. In order to be granted this visa, businesses in Australia would need to demonstrate a talent gap for the position. Candidates must be under the age of 45 and have at least two years of prior work experience.

2. Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa - This short-term visa is available to skilled workers who wish to live and work in regional Australia.

3. Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa - This visa is intended for highly specialized, short-term work in the country.

4.Working holiday visa: For those between the ages of 18 and 30, this visa allows them to work temporary jobs in Australia while on vacation. The validity period is twelve months.

Evaluation of abilities

A skill evaluation is part of the application process for a work visa. A profession that is on Australia's Occupational Demand List must be chosen. This list will include occupations where there is a skills shortage in the workforce. Each profession on the list has its own evaluation authority for skill sets. The Australian Computer Society (ACS) rates IT and computer jobs. Trade occupations are evaluated using the TRA (Trade Recognition Australia) or the VETASSESS (Vocational Educational and Training Assessment Services).

To proceed to the next stage of the visa application process, a candidate must receive a favorable skill evaluation.

To have their skill assessment completed, candidates must meet the requirements set by the assessing authority that is evaluating their occupation. The candidate must have the necessary training and experience to receive a favorable evaluation.

In order for your skill assessment to be positive, your occupation must be relevant to your work experience. If there is an error, you will not receive the required points.

You must also submit all necessary documentation. Any inconsistency in your documents can lead to a poor evaluation, so they must be genuine and thorough.

You must provide any additional information requested by the evaluating authority.

The papers should back up your claims of experience and qualifications.

The following factors were considered by the evaluating authority:

  • occupation specified on your nomination form
  • Your qualifications
  • your work history the connection between your work and the visa category you are seeking
