Who is eligible to apply for a Chevening Scholarship at university of UK 2024?

The deadline for applying for fully funded Chevening Scholarships to study for one-year master's degrees at UK universities is annually.

Chevening provides outstanding emerging leaders from around the world with the opportunity to pursue one-year master's degrees in the United Kingdom.

There is no such thing as a "typical" Chevening Scholar, but those who are successful have ambition, leadership qualities, and a strong desire to affect positive change in their home countries.

If you meet our eligibility criteria and other requirements, we encourage you to apply. Your gender and age (there is no upper age limit). 

What matters is your ability to submit a well-thought-out application that demonstrates you are capable of excelling on a rigorous master's program in the UK and that you have a clear vision for your future.

Working Experience in Chevening Scholarships at university of UK 2024

Before submitting your Chevening application, you must ensure that you meet the minimum work-experience requirement for the scholarship. 

Applicants for Chevening Scholarships must have at least two years of work experience.

You will be unable to submit your application if you do not already have the required level of work experience.

Eligibility requirements of work experience Chevening Scholarships 2024

 Work experience that is eligible for Chevening can include:

  • Working full-time
  • Working part-time
  • Volunteer work
  • Internships, whether paid or unpaid

Work experience can be gained before, during, or after completing your undergraduate studies; however, any mandatory employment that counts toward your undergraduate or postgraduate course is ineligible.

You are not required to fulfill the work experience requirement in a single period of employment. 

To meet the requirement, applicants may submit up to fifteen different employment periods. If you have held more than fifteen positions, please enter the time periods with the most hours worked.

If you are currently employed, you are not required to resign from your position by Chevening. 

You should discuss your application with your employer, and it is your responsibility to ensure that if you are selected for a Chevening Scholarship, they will release you.

How to Determine Your Work Experience in Chevening Scholarships 2024

 Your entries will be automatically calculated by dividing the number of weeks worked by the number of hours worked per week. 

For this calculation, a working week is 35-60 hours long, and a working year is 40-50 weeks long. Anything that exceeds the full-time employment limit will be deemed ineligible.

Before applying for a Chevening Scholarship, an applicant must have completed the following number of hours:

Eligibility Criteria To apply for Chevening Scholarships 2024

 Ineligible applications will be rejected, so make sure you meet our eligibility requirements before you begin your application.

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a resident of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Return to your home country for at least two years after your award has expired.
  • By the time you submit your application, you should have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will allow you to gain entry into a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the United Kingdom, but it may differ depending on your course and university of choice.
  • Have at least two years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours).
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have an unconditional offer from one of these options by July 14, 2022.

If you meet the following criteria, you are ineligible for a Chevening Scholarship:
  • Have British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a British Overseas Territory citizen or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
  • Have refugee status in a country that is not a Chevening eligible country. Scholarships are available to applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and have refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country.
  • Are you an employee, a former employee, or a relative* of an employee of Her Majesty's Government, or have been within the last two years from the opening of Chevening applications (including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, all British Embassies/High Commissions, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for International Trade, and the UKVI), the British Council, a sponsoring UK university, or the British Council
  • Employees, former employees, or relatives* of an employee of Chevening Partner organizations are eligible to apply; however, if the employment occurred within the last two years, you will be ineligible to receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organization where you previously worked.
  • Have previously studied in the United Kingdom with the assistance of a UK Government-funded scholarship.
Having a master's degree does not preclude you from applying for a Chevening Award to study for a second master's degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain how it will help you fulfill your career goals of influencing positive change in your home country.

Once submitted, applications are electronically screened against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from consideration.
