Visa travel Waiver Program for US Citizens 2023:
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which is administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in collaboration with the Department of State, allows citizens of 40 countries to visit the United States for business or pleasure and stay for up to 90 days without a visa.

Beginning in Spring 2023, US citizens and travelers from 58 other countries will be required to obtain a European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) visa waiver in order to travel to any Schengen-zone country for short stays.
Beginning in 2022, however, American citizens will need to obtain a visa waiver for Europe for stays of less than 90 days in Schengen countries.

American citizens who wish to stay in Europe for longer periods of time or for purposes other than those permitted by the ETIA must apply for a Schengen visa.
When the four countries, including Bulgaria, are admitted to Schengen, travelers will be required to have ETIAS approval as well.
While American travelers would still not need a Schengen visa, they would be subjected to a background check before entering EU countries.
Non-EU citizens who do not require visas to enter the Schengen Area will have to apply for pre-clearance before visiting Schengen countries beginning in May 2023.
Countries requesting travel authorization must notify passengers about the new regulations during this time period.
By November 2023, any American citizen who wishes to travel to any of the 26 members of Europe's Schengen Area must sign up for ETIA or risk being turned back at the border.
Travelers do not need an ESTA authorization to enter Eastern European countries that are not part of the Schengen Zone, which include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine. In other words, ETIAS will screen travelers who do not require a Schengen Visa from the EU.

This process, which calls for setting up appointments with American embassies to conduct background checks, can frequently take months. During these interviews, consular officials try to ensure that incoming visitors aren't planning to stay indefinitely at U.S. embassies.
